Understanding the New NSW Health Risk Assessment Process

As of February 2025, all NSW firearm applicants are required to complete a Health Risk Assessment for the Use or Possession of Firearms.

This involves a collaborative process between your psychologist and your general practitioner (GP).

  • You attend a psychological assessment conducted by a qualified psychologist.

  • A comprehensive report is prepared and sent directly to your nominated GP.

  • Your GP reviews the findings, completes the official Health Risk Assessment form, and submits it to the NSW Firearms Registry.

This process ensures a fair, thorough, and evidence-based evaluation of your psychological health and suitability for firearm ownership.

For more details, see the NSW Police Force Health Risk Assessment Guidelines.

Our Health Risk Assessment Process

We make the process straightforward and professional from start to finish:

  1. Initial Consultation – Discuss your background, health, and purpose of assessment.

  2. Psychometric Testing – Complete evidence-based psychological measures (e.g. Personality Assessment Inventory).

  3. Follow-Up Session – Review and clarify assessment outcomes.

  4. Report Preparation – A detailed, objective report is prepared by your psychologist.

  5. Report Sent to GP – The report is sent securely to your GP for final submission to the NSW Police Firearms Registry.

Assessments can be completed in-person at our Gladesville clinic or via Telehealth for clients across NSW.

Each assessment is conducted by an experienced, registered psychologist. You can learn more about our team on the Meet Dean - Counselling Psychologist page.
