Fees, Medicare Rebates and Out-of-Pocket Costs Explained

Understanding the cost of seeing a psychologist can help you plan your care with confidence. Fees for psychological services in Sydney vary depending on the practitioner’s experience, qualifications and the type of service being provided.

At iflow Psychology in Gladesville, we provide evidence-based counselling and psychological assessments for adults, adolescents and couples.

Sessions are available in person at our Gladesville clinic or via secure telehealth across NSW.

When eligible, Medicare rebates under the Better Access program may reduce your out-of-pocket cost.

This guide explains typical psychology fees in Sydney, how Medicare rebates work, and what factors influence the cost of therapy.

How Much Does a Psychologist Cost in Sydney?

Typical Psychology Fees in Sydney

Psychologists in Sydney typically charge between $200 and $300 per session for standard consultations. Fees may vary depending on:

• the psychologist’s qualifications and experience
• whether the service is therapy or an assessment
• session length
• location and practice structure

Specialised assessments or extended sessions may involve different fee structures.

Private practices set their own fees, while rebates (where applicable) are determined by the Australian Government through the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).

Medicare Rebates for Psychology

If your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician prepares a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and refers you to a psychologist, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates under the Better Access initiative.

Under current arrangements:

• Individuals may access up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year with Medicare rebates

• Rebates are processed through Medicare based on the relevant MBS item number

Your psychologist or clinic can often assist with on-the-spot claiming, or you may claim the rebate directly through Medicare.

Estimated Out-of-Pocket Cost

The Medicare rebate reduces your total cost, but it does not usually cover the entire session fee.

Your out-of-pocket cost will depend on:

• the psychologist’s fee
• the Medicare rebate amount
• the type of consultation
• whether you are attending in person or via telehealth

Your psychologist or clinic can explain fees and rebates prior to your appointment so you can make an informed decision.

Factors That Influence Psychology Fees

Several factors influence the cost of psychological services:

Qualifications and Experience

Highly experienced psychologists or those with specialist endorsements may charge higher fees.

Type of Service

Therapy sessions typically differ in cost from comprehensive psychological assessments.

Session Length

Standard sessions are often 50–60 minutes, but longer appointments may be required in some circumstances.

Telehealth vs In-Person

Telehealth sessions follow similar billing rules but allow clients across NSW to access support without travelling.

For Medicare rebates, you generally need a GP MHTP and referral, or a referral from a psychiatrist/paediatrician.

Are there changes coming in 2025?
