What We Help With

Adolescents may benefit from therapy when they are struggling with:

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, or excessive worry

  • Depression, low mood, or loss of interest in usual activities

  • School, exam, or social stress

  • Bullying, cyberbullying, or peer conflict

  • Family separation, relocation, or grief and loss

  • Body image, eating concerns, or self-esteem issues

  • Risky behaviours (e.g. substance use, self-harm, impulsive behaviour)

  • Identity, belonging, or cultural challenges

  • Difficulties with friendships, dating, or social media

Many adolescents also seek support around identity, belonging, cultural expectations, and navigating friendships, dating, or social media pressures, and therapy provides a respectful space to explore these experiences.

Therapy can help teens understand themselves better, manage emotions more effectively, and develop more supportive relationships at home, school, and in their communities.

What’s Included

Adolescent therapy at iflow Psychology typically includes:

  • Initial assessment: A structured intake to understand your teenager’s history, strengths, challenges, and goals.

  • Evidence-based therapy sessions: Regular one-on-one sessions tailored to the young person’s needs.

  • Family involvement where helpful: Parent or family sessions to support communication and problem-solving.

  • Practical strategies: Skills and tools that can be used at school, home, and in social settings.

  • Review and feedback: Periodic check-ins to monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

We work collaboratively with adolescents, parents, and other supports (e.g. GPs, schools) where appropriate and with consent.

What to Expect from Therapy

We aim to make therapy as safe, respectful, and understandable as possible for young people.

  • First contact: Parents or caregivers usually contact our admin team to discuss concerns and booking options.

  • Parent and teen input: We often start with a parent consultation, then meet with the adolescent to hear their perspective and goals.

  • Safe and confidential space: Sessions give teens a private and non-judgemental place to talk. We explain limits of confidentiality clearly and include parents when this supports the young person’s wellbeing.

  • Practical, skills-based work: Therapy focuses on real-life strategies – managing big feelings, dealing with stress, and navigating friendships, school, and family life.

  • Collaborative planning: Goals are set together, and we regularly check what is and isn’t working.

Adolescents are encouraged to bring their questions, concerns, and ideas to therapy so that it feels relevant and meaningful to them.

Benefits

Adolescent therapy can support young people to:

  • Understand and manage difficult emotions such as anxiety, anger, and sadness

  • Build resilience and confidence when facing school, social, or family pressures

  • Develop healthier coping strategies instead of avoidance, aggression, or self-harm

  • Improve communication with parents, siblings, teachers, and peers

  • Strengthen sense of identity, belonging, and self-worth

  • Learn skills for problem-solving, decision-making, and boundary-setting

Early support can reduce the impact of stress and help teenagers develop skills that protect their mental health into adulthood.

Information for Parents

Supporting a teenager can feel challenging, especially when emotions, school demands, friendships, and family life are shifting rapidly. We aim to make the process clear, collaborative, and supportive for both young people and their parents or caregivers.

Confidentiality
Adolescents need a private and safe space to speak openly. We explain confidentiality in plain language and outline the situations when information may need to be shared for safety reasons. Wherever possible, we keep young people informed about any collaboration with parents, schools, or health professionals.

Initial Parent Consultation
We usually begin with a parent or caregiver consultation to gather background information and understand your concerns. This helps ensure therapy is focused, respectful, and aligned with your family’s needs.

Parent Involvement
Your involvement is important. We include parents and caregivers when this supports the young person’s goals—whether through updates, family sessions, or practical strategies to use at home.

Flexible Access
Appointments are available in person at our Gladesville clinic or via secure telehealth statewide, giving families flexibility around school schedules, transport, or distance.

Medicare Rebates
Many adolescents can access Medicare rebates when referred by a GP, paediatrician, or psychiatrist under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Our admin team can guide you through the process if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide crisis support?

We provide therapeutic support but not emergency crisis services. If your family is currently in crisis, please visit our Crisis Support page for immediate assistance or contact emergency services if there is immediate risk.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

Families often seek therapy when communication becomes difficult, conflict escalates, changes feel overwhelming, or when a child’s wellbeing is impacted. If challenges are affecting daily life or relationships, professional support can provide clarity and direction.

Can separated or blended families attend together?

Yes. Therapy can support co-parenting, transitions, strengthening communication between households, and helping children adjust to change. Sessions are structured to ensure emotional safety for everyone involved.

What issues can family therapy help with?

Family therapy supports a wide range of concerns, including communication breakdowns, parent–child conflict, separation or blended family transitions, emotional or behavioural concerns in children, grief, trauma, and stress affecting family functioning.

Do we need a GP referral for family therapy?

No referral is required. However, some family-focused sessions may be eligible for Medicare rebates when the work aligns with a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan. We can advise you on the best pathway before your first appointment.

Is family therapy confidential?

Yes. Sessions are confidential within the limits of Australian law and professional standards. Your psychologist will explain how confidentiality works in family therapy, including how information is managed when multiple family members attend sessions.

Can children or teenagers attend family therapy?

Yes. Children and adolescents often play an important role in the family system. Sessions can include children directly, or involve parent-only consultations depending on the child’s age, developmental stage, and presenting concerns.

Do you offer telehealth family therapy?

Yes. We provide secure telehealth sessions for families across NSW. Telehealth can be useful for families with busy schedules, separated households, or when multiple members are joining from different locations.

How many sessions do families usually need?

Most families attend between 6–8 sessions, depending on the concerns, goals, and willingness of members to participate. Some families benefit from short-term support, while others choose longer-term work to address more complex patterns.

What happens during a family therapy session?

Family therapy sessions involve guided conversations that help family members understand each other’s perspectives, improve communication, and work through patterns contributing to conflict or distress. The psychologist will structure the session around the family’s goals and may meet with the whole family together or with individuals when clinically appropriate.
