Medicare Rebates for Psychology (Better Access) – Gladesville

Getting support should be straightforward. At iflow Psychology in Gladesville, we can see you in-person or via telehealth across Sydney and NSW. Many clients are eligible for Medicare rebates under the Better Access initiative with a valid referral and plan.

How Medicare (Better Access) Works

  • If your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician assesses that you would benefit from psychological support, they can prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and refer you.

  • With a valid referral, you may access up to 10 individual and up to 10 group rebated psychology sessions per calendar year (caps current at the time of writing).

Note (dated 13 October 2025): The Australian Government has announced Better Access changes from 1 November 2025. Some referral and review processes will shift (e.g., linkage to your MyMedicare registered practice/usual doctor). We’ll keep this page updated; your GP will advise what applies to you.

Eligibility & Referrals (Simple Steps)

  • Book your GP to discuss mental health concerns.

  • Your GP may create/renew an MHTP and refer you to iflow Psychology.

  • Bring your referral and plan (or have the GP e-send it to us).

  • Book your first session (in-person or telehealth).
Facts and billing rules are set by the Government (Services Australia/MBS).

Telehealth Psychology (NSW & across Australia)

We offer secure video sessions. When clinically appropriate, Medicare rebates also apply to telehealth under Better Access. Ask us if telehealth suits your needs.

Fees, rebates & claiming

  • We’re a private practice. Session fees apply; if eligible, a Medicare rebate reduces your out-of-pocket cost.

  • We can assist with on-the-spot claiming where possible; otherwise, you can claim your rebate online after payment.

  • Your exact rebate depends on the MBS item and your referral type. See official guidance for the latest settings.

What to bring to your first appointment

  • GP referral letter and MHTP (or have it emailed to admin@iflowpsychology.com.au)

  • Medicare card details

  • Any relevant reports, medication list, or previous treatment notes

Common questions (FAQs)

How many rebated sessions can I get each year?

Up to 10 individual and 10 group sessions per calendar year under Better Access (current cap). Your GP typically reviews progress after the first block of sessions.

Do telehealth sessions qualify for rebates?

Yes—when clinically appropriate and when eligibility criteria are met. Your clinician can advise whether telehealth is suitable for you.

Do I need a GP referral?

For Medicare rebates, you generally need a GP MHTP and referral, or a referral from a psychiatrist/paediatrician.

Are there changes coming in 2025?

Yes. From 1 November 2025, the Government has flagged process changes (e.g., referral/review linkage to your MyMedicare practice/usual doctor). Your GP will guide you and we’ll reflect updates here.
